Jamestown Island

Jamestown Island lies along the James River in present-day Jamestown, where history, archaeology, and nature intersect in a powerful way. Surrounded by tidal marshes and forested shoreline, the island preserves the landscape of the first permanent English settlement in North America, established in 1607. Shaped by centuries of river currents and rising tides, Jamestown Island offers a vivid connection to the earliest chapter of American history.

Long before English settlers arrived, the island and surrounding waterways were part of the homeland of the Powhatan Confederacy, who relied on the river’s rich resources for food, travel, and trade. When English colonists built their fort here, they encountered both opportunity and hardship—facing disease, starvation, and conflict, while forging a foothold that would permanently alter the course of history. Ongoing archaeological work continues to uncover artifacts that deepen our understanding of daily life, survival, and cultural exchange during the colony’s earliest years.

Today, visitors can explore Jamestown Island on foot, by bike, or by water, following trails that wind past archaeological sites, earthworks, and expansive river views. Jamestown Island is also home to abundant wildlife, including bald eagles, ospreys, herons, and waterfowl along the river and marshes. Powhatan Creek

Powhatan Creek is a 23-mile tributary of the James River, joining it at historic Jamestown Island. Tidal for roughly four miles upstream, the creek averages about six feet deep at high tide and is recognized as one of the most environmentally significant and biologically diverse natural areas on the Virginia Peninsula.

For centuries, this waterway has sustained human life. It was an important resource for the Powhatan Confederacy, including Chief Powhatan and his daughter Pocahontas, long before European arrival. In 1607, Captains Christopher Newport and John Smith explored the creek while establishing the first permanent English settlement in North America.

Today, Powhatan Creek serves as an access point to the 3,000-mile Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Water Trail. It offers a peaceful and memorable setting for kayaking and canoeing, where visitors can observe birds, native plants, and abundant wildlife. Paddling these waters provides a rare opportunity to experience the same landscape that shaped Native American life and early colonial history.

Wildlife along Powhatan Creek includes iconic birds such as bald eagles, great blue herons, ospreys, and belted kingfishers, along with butterflies like monarchs and eastern tiger swallowtails. Mammals such as beavers and muskrats, along with reptiles, fish, and invertebrates, contribute to the creek’s rich and dynamic ecosystem.
